1965- Self-Portrait

1965 Self-Portrait, pencil, paint and charcoal on board.

Self-Portrait, oil paint on glass with wood and mirror box, 28" x 22".

Both portraits were done as projects for the Pre-Diploma course. The first is a detail from a life size self-portrait of me in the nude. I had just discovered the work of Giacometti and was emulating his approach in many of my drawings. The second is a mirror box with a self-portrait painted on the back of the glass, so that what is reflected in the mirror behind is a little different from the image that faces out. I was fascinated by mirrors and magic boxes, with what is 'real' and what is reflection. It was for an 'Environment' project, so I guess I saw all as reflection of self.
