1991- Cohoba Rite

1991 'Cohoba Rite', acrylic on mahogany panel, 3' x 4'. Commissioned for 'On the Trail of the Arawaks' permanent exhibit, St. Martin, French West Indies.

Article in 'Anguilla Life' on the St. Martin exhibition with reproductions of my series of commissioned paintings.

After I painted the series of Historical Murals for the airport in Anguilla, I was asked to paint this series for the museum in Marigot, French St. Martin. I created these paintings bringing together my research on the anthropology and archaeology of the Arawak Indians, combining the images with the geography of the local island.

  • "Penny speaks with love and respect for these so called 'primitive beings', who were powerful in a way the modern world has forgotten. Each gesture of their everyday life was in accord with the forces of nature. Their rhythm of life rested on a balance between the visible and the invisible world, and on harmony between the natural elements and man. " We have lost this contract with nature,"
