Interior, lower level, Thai house.
- Nik
brought a group of traditional teak houses in Thailand,
had them blessed, disassembled and numbered then shipped
to Anguilla, West Indies. They were painstakingly
re-erected in their original formation. On a trip
to Thailand together, Nik and I selected the furnishings
and decorations for the house.
- "A
short stroll but light years away from the convivial
beach bars of Anguilla's popular Shoal Bay is a very
special place, a spiritual refuge of sorts tucked
into the far western reaches of the white-sand strand.
Quietly hugging the ridge and subtly stretching spires
over the scrub is a cluster of traditional Thai houses
some two centuries old, an Oriental fantasy inhabited
by an extraordinary British couple deeply involved
in the discovery and preservation of the ancient Amerindian
culture of their adopted island home. At first glance,
the historic Asian structures might seem strangely
out of place in this modern Caribbean vacationland,
but permeating the compound is a spirit shared by
ancient peoples from Buddha to the ancestors of the
Amerindians of the Antilles. Passing through the gate
is stepping into a past rich in spirit, a spirit that
is practically tangible, a surreal world of earthy
fragrances and exotic flowers, of sleek cats and courting
lizards, of rare books and ancient treasures."
