1984-93- Arawak Archaeo

1990 'Anguilla Life' magazine cover featuring 'Marine Life' mural by Penny, from series of murals commissioned for Wallblake Airport, Anguilla. This painting is in acrylic on wood panel, 8' x 4'.

  • Penny is a regular contributer to the magazine for many years, writing about and photographing local art and culture.
  • "What is one of Anguilla's greatest tourist attractions? Being a relatively small island, it is the gorgeous white coral beaches and the turquoise and lapis waters that surround her. This is a rich and wonderful resource, so I wanted to create a picture focused on the sea. But rather than showing typical tourist related activities, I wanted to show the Anguillian relationship to the sea. I thought this would be of great service in recording the life of the people of the island, and would be of great interest to visitors who might otherwise not be able to see and experience all these things for themselves. A real part of culture here. Culture is also an attraction, something genuine we need to protect and cultivate."

1992 'Big Spring', acrylic on mahogany panel, 8' x 4'.

1988 'Plantation Days', acrylic on mahogany panel, 8' x 4.

I painted the historical series of murals for Anguilla's airport because I wanted a people their history 'at a glance'. I selected key periods in the island's evolution and 'collaged' together elements of each era to create these paintings.

"On four 8' x 4' wooden panels, I have attempted to trace some phases and highlights of Anguilla's evolution. As visitors pass by these successive panels, I hope they will be taken on a journey through time into the island's past..In the case of these murals, I spent a considerable amount of time meditating on the subjects. Also, two key words in approaching my work are 'collage' and 'surrealism'. I have spent many years working with various forms of collage, which for me means cutting up different elements of 'reality' and reassembling them to form a new 'reality'. This combines well with my other study subject, surrealism, which I understand as being 'above and beyond' realism'..I then use the collage technique to produce a 'time warp' and condense time."
