1977. Publication of 'The Book of Matan', compiled by
Nik Douglas. A book of automatic writing featuring cover
art and full-color collage illustrations by Penny, Neville
Spearman Publications.
Nik's father was killed in his house in the Turkish
invasion of Cyprus. The invading soldiers then occupied
the residence, destroying much of its contents and subsequently
auctioning the rest 'for the Turkish war effort'. When
Nik went back to the house it was before the Turks came
to take things for the auction. He found his father's
body in the garden and buried him. He also found a quote
from 'The Book of Matan' laying on his chest. The only
item of furniture that had not been ransacked was a
small desk with a drawer that would not open. After
prying it open, Nik found the manuscript for the book,
with a request from his father that Nik get it published.
I contributed the collages because I felt a particular
connection to the mystic parable of spiritual unfolding
that is told in the book.

"The book beautifully and poetically tells the story
of a man who, through a series of potent visions and
experiences, comes to terms with the female archetype..The
book is beautifully illustrated with photographic collages
in full color. They evoke the mood of the writing and
give form to its symbols." Book review.
."It
reads like a fable as told by Kahlil Gibran's Prophet,
though with more sensuality permitted. The tale is coherent
and engaging," The Guardian, 1977.
