1969. 'Mummy Case'. Life size 3-D sculpture and assemblage.
Life casts, death casts, fiberglass, resin, bone, stainless
steel, silk stocking and satin.
The
'Mummy Case' was made during my last year at Chelsea
College of Art. It was exhibited in 'Young and Fantastic'
at the Institute of Contemporary Art, London, in the
summer of '69. This piece was made during the period
when I was trying to overcome my squeamishness and death
taboos by drawing and photographing in the dissecting
room at a London hospital. There are life casts in the
Mummy Case of mummified body parts. The face and breasts
are life casts of myself. The 'Mummy Case' is homage
to a deep connection with ancient Egypt.
