'The Road to Freedom', one of the series of 'Historical
Murals' commissioned for Wallblake Airport, Anguilla.

I
decided that I would use my talents to make a bridge
between myself and the culture of the place in which
I now resided, rather than continue with work that I
would have to exhibit abroad. I painted portraits of
local people and places, but then I realized that I
could help paint a portrait of a people, representing
their history and identity. The Anguilla Revolution
of 1967 had been a landmark in history, a virtually
bloodless revolution where 'the mouse that roared' (the
little island of Anguilla) achieved its desired objectives.
- " Even though this all went on only twenty years ago,
memories fade and there was a whole new generation
of young Anguillians who needed to know what their
fathers and mothers had fought for. Again, images
can make a much deeper and more lasting impression
than words alone, so I wanted to make this painting
really sing with the spirit of the revolution. Of
course, I personally wasn't there, so I had to do
it through research and what powers of empathy and
imagination I could bring to bear."
