1971-ShadowMan

1970-71 Penny as the 'Shadow Man'.

Penny performing on stilts.

Promotional material for Woman's Theatre.

Collage of press cuttings. 'A MIND-EXPANDING PRODUCTION'

All images from 'Holocaust' - an all-woman theatrical troupe (directed by Jane Arden). The troupe performs in 'A New Communion for Prophets, Freaks and Witches' at the Open Space Theatre, London, and Edinburgh Festival, Scotland. I got involved with the woman's theatre group because I was longing for some kind of artistic community beyond the cult of the individual artist. I wanted to participate in the liberation of the feminine, but through creative expression rather than political feminism. We evolved the theatrical performances from intense personal workshops and went on to make a movie 'The Other side of the Underneath' in 1971, in which I both acted and art directed.

"Penny Slinger, a sculptress, acted for the first time in the first film to be written and directed by Jane Arden, 'The Other Side of the Underneath', it opens at the Paris Pullman on Thursday, after causing something of a stir at the Edinburgh and London film Festivals…

"At 25 Penny Slinger's a girl of many parts, most of them painfully private. Making them public as a sculptor, as a writer and as an actress is what she feels bound to do. 'Creatively, I suppose I've found all my material within my own skin. One way or another for the past years I have been performing an autobiography.'" Philip Oakes - Sunday Times 1973.
